The Lord spoke to Ananias concerning Paul’s suffering Acts 9:15-16 – “But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. The idea of Paul's suffering, found in the first part of verse 24, should not be separated too severely from his self-understanding as a servant of the gospel. In fact, in the biblical tradition the two belong together: like Christ and the prophets of God before him, Paul is a "suffering servant. Paul sees his own physical suffering and spiritual renewal—”though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day day” (2 Cor. 4:16)—as a presentation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul again and again hits on the theme that the weakness of his frame is designed to magnify the power of God’s name. "Beneath the suffering of physical sickness, loss, betrayal, or whatever other dark thing has entered the door is something way more powerful and dangerous. It is the spiritual war that rages in the heart of every sufferer." If you're familiar at all with Paul Tripp's teaching, then you probably know that he places a lot of emphasis on the heart. Suffering is a participation in the mystery of Christ and is the way Paul can become like Christ.
